Universal Beams
Both Columns and Universal Beams (UB) or I-beams are referred to "I-Sections" or "H-Sections". Univeral beams are identified by their greater depth to width ratio which allows for higher bending capacities when compared to Universal Columns (UC). Because the width is somewhat smaller than the height, Universal Beams have a reduced capacity in the transverse direction and are also inefficient at resisting torsion. Universal Beams are commonly used for long spans and whre vertical loads need to be contained with a light weight structure. The last number in the description is the weight of the beam in kg per m.
Additional information regarding the properties of UB sections can be found Here.
