Metric and Imperial Units

The above formulas may be used with both imperial and metric units. As with all calculations care must be taken to keep consistent units throughout with examples of units which should be adopted listed below:

Notation

  • B = breadth, in or mm
  • D = depth, in or mm
  • I = second moment of area, in4 or mm4
  • Q = first moment of area, in3 or mm3
  • v = Poisson's ratio, unitless
  • V = transverse shear force (from shear force diagram), lbf or N
  • x = distance to point of interest, in or mm
  • tH = horizontal shear force, Psi or MPa
