Notation and Units
Metric and Imperial Units
The above weld group stress equations may be used with both imperial and metric units. As with all mathematical calculations care must be taken to keep consistent units throughout. Examples of units which could be adopted have been provided below:
Notation
- a = weld throat thickness, in or mm
- AW = area of weld group, in2 or mm2
- B = width of weld group, in or mm
- H = height of weld group, in or mm
- x = distance to centre of area (centroid), in or mm
- y = distance to centre of area (centroid), in or mm
- IWX = second moment of area of weld group in x direction, in or mm
- IWY = second moment of area of weld group in y direction, in or mm
