Minimum Proof Loads

With so many bolts available these days it is essential to understand the strengths and weaknesses different bolts have when compared to one another. The below table outlines some useful properties that are required for design purposes for some of the more commonly encountered bolt types. If there is any doubt about any of the properties, the manufacturer or supplier should be contacted. When substituting bolts, an engineer should be consulted.

What is Minimum Proof Load?

Proof load is defined as the maximum tensile force that can be applied to a bolt that will not result in plastic deformation. In other words, the material must remain in its elastic region when loaded up to its proof load.
