Concrete Strength and Application
How strong does concrete need to be?
Basically, concrete needs to be strong enough to meet the needs of its intended application. Although the below table can be used to get an indication of the strength of concrete that will be required based on its purpose, it should be remembered that concrete design is fairly complex and a multitude of other factors need to be taken into account during design. Not only does the concrete have to be strong enough, but also it must have the right consistency for placement, it must be durable for the life of the structure and it must look good. It should be mentioned that there are many other things that may need to be considered including shrinkage, permeability and in some cases stainability or its resistance to stains.
